What is considered here as probably one of the last big Nazi war crimes trial began today in Frankfurt. It concerns the mass murder of Jews and non-Jews in the Western territories of the Soviet Union during 1941-42. Alfred Ebner, 58, a businessman from Stuttgart, is charged with complicity in the murder of 30,000 Jews and 6,000 Soviet army commissars in the Pinsk area, where Ebner was the deputy regional Nazi commander. A plea by Ebner’s lawyers that he was in bad health and therefore unable to stand trial was rejected by Frankfurt’s Public Prosecutor. Along with Ebner several former members of the 306th Nazi Police Battalion charged with abetting the mass murders will also stand trial.
