The representatives of the United States, Britain and France at the United Nations met today with Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns, UN truce supervisor in Palestine, for a discussion of the Gaza situation. After conferring with Henry Cabot Lodge, Sir Pierson Dixon, Henri Hoppenot and Mr. Hammarskjold, Gen. Burns left for a week-end visit to his home in Ottawa.
It was learned here today from authoritative sources that the U. S. delegation wants the Security Council to adopt a three-point resolution which would censure Israel for “aggression” across the Gaza strip frontier on the night of February 28; ask “both” sides to prevent further clashes along the Israel-Egyptian border, and ask “both” sides to help Gen. Burns in his task of policing the armistice between Israel and the Arab states.
On the other hand, the United States does not want the Council at this point to discuss Israel’s counter-grievance against Egypt, which claims that the Gaza clash was only one of many border incidents. Nor does the United States want the Council to go beyond the armistice agreement, in line with Israel’s ideas, in an effort to push the Arab states into discussing peace with Israel.
