The 21 country ORT program of technical and vocational education will enroll a record number of youth and adults during 1971. The ORT budget similarly will top previous years substantially. These forecasts were made by Dr. William Haber, president of the American ORT Federation in a call for the organization’s 49th national conference to be held at the Americana Hotel on Saturday and Sunday. More than 600 delegates from Jewish communities throughout the country are expected to attend, General Haim Herzog, president of ORT in Israel, will be the main speaker at the final dinner session of the conference. “The ORT needs budget, as now projected, will be the focus of this conference,” Dr. Haber stated. “The plain fact is that ORT schools are imbedded in the survival fabric of the new generation in Israel and elsewhere, and it will take more money to do what is necessary.” The connection between education, and especially technical education, and defense is obvious, Dr. Haber noted. “But in a deeper sense,” he added, “the economic viability of Israel is equally at stake. Israel is being drained economically and its future must be anticipated now by greater investment in its human resources.”
