Republican Senator Clifford Case, of New Jersey, to day introduced a bill to amend the Eisenhower refugee program by permitting 5, 000 refugees from non-Communist countries to be included among the 68, 000 escapees from Communism admitted annually.

While the new Case amendment does not refer specifically to Jewish refugees from Egypt, a spokesman for Sen. Case said this was the intended application and that it had the backing of the State Department. Co-sponsors of the amendment are Republican Senators Jacob K Javits and Irving Ives, both of New York, and Sen. H. Alexander Smith of New Jersey.

In correspondence with the State Department, the amendment’s sponsors made known their desire to provide a measure of relief to Jews escaping from Egypt. The State Department supported the idea although the Departments correspondence avoided specific reference to Jewish escapees or Egypt. The State Department said it favored the amendment because it recognized "imminent problems of escapees from dictatorships of any kind. "

The measure was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Hearings may be held after the committee concludes consideration of civil rights matters.
