Birthright Israel expects to send 6,135 young Jews to Israel this winter. The free 10-day trips start Dec. 26 and include 3,149 North Americans, 1,596 Jews from the former Soviet Union and 670 from Latin America. The program initially had hoped to send more than 10,000 Jews this winter, but recruitment has been difficult and cancellation rates high due to fears of terrorism that have hurt Israel’s tourism industry.
