Dr. Albright, director of the American Archaeological Institute in Jerusalem and Dr. Denby, correspondent of the “London Times” and Cannon of the St. George Cathedral, both great Hebrew scholars, were among the five witnesses who were called by the counsel for the defense to testify in the blasphemy trial which was started here yesterday against the Hebrew daily paper, “Doar Ha’yom”.
The court was presided over by two judges an Englishman, Baker, president of the Jerusalem District Court and Court Member Abdul Hadi, an Arab. The prosecuting attorney was Hatchuel, a Sephardic Jew. Attorney Meckler was present as the representative of Cardinal Barlassina. He was not permitted to bring charges.
The public was excluded from the courtroom; only press representatives were present.
After the witnesses were heard, it was the general impression that the charge of the prosecution was shaken.
