Police dispersed yesterday a religious demonstration against traffic in one of the streets in the Orthodox city of Bnai Brak. Hundreds of religious Jews tried to block traffic on the street several times, but were dispersed each time by police. Traffic is banned as a general rule throughout the city — which is largely populated with Orthodox families, but the specific street is out of the boundaries of the religious neighborhood.
The demonstrators did not oppose the police action, but exchanged sharp words with groups of non-religious demonstrators who came to campaign for their right to drive on Saturday. Some of the non-religious removed signs placed by the city asking drivers to avoid driving on Saturdays.
