B’nai B’rith leaders from four Eastern states addressed an appeal to President Johnson urging him to act on ratification by the U.S. Senate of the United Nations Genocide convention outlawing the mass murder of religious, racial and ethnic groups, it was reported here today; The convention was developed as an effort to prevent such mass murders as that of the European Jews by the Nazis.
The appeal was made by the four-state B’nai B’rith district of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and West Virginia, which pointed out in a resolution that the United States signed the international convention in December, 1948, but that it has never been ratified by the U. S. Senate.
The resolution also pointed out that 66 other nations have completed ratification procedures of the convention but the matter is pending in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, despite a favorable report on the measure by a subcommittee.
