B’nai B’rith began this week the celebration of its 100th anniversary in Washington, D.C., as part of the national capital scene. The Washington Post issued a special supplement to commemorate the centennial of the Jewish organization’s local history. B’nai B’rith was formed in Washington at the end of the Civil War, in 1865, as the Elijah Lodge, to unite Northern Jews and those co-religionists who cast their lot with the Southern states.
The local celebration will be highlighted by a three-day annual meeting of B’nai B’rith’s international board of governors. A centennial dinner, attended by an estimated 1,200 persons, will take place November 21 and will witness the presentation of the B’nai B’rith humanitarianism award to both Israel Ambassador and Mrs. Avraham Harman.
