A record budget of $5,290,000 was adopted at the B’nai B’rith 114th annual meeting here today for activities in 1958. Among other projects, it was announced that B’nai B’rith will start publication of a “great books” series and of a quarterly entitled “Jewish Heritage.”
Advances in the B’nai B’rith adult Jewish education program were reported to the convention. The program, the report said, has reached many adults. President Philip Klutznick told of efforts “to promote the concept that education is not a vicarious business for adults but a continuing process which has a place in every man’s life.”
The B’nai B’rith may hold its next triennial convention in Israel in the spring of 1959 as a result of a decision taken at the annual meeting. An invitation to meet in Israel was issued by President Ben Zvi, and presented to the B’nai B’rith board by Prof. Joseph Rivlin, president of B’nai B’rith in Israel. The matter was referred to a subcommittee A report by the subcommittee was favorable contingent upon a determination of the cost of chartering planes and other expenses.
The idea of meeting in Israel was approved by voice vote in principle by the board. If further determination shows that transportation and housing are satisfactory, the B’nai B’rith administration is under instruction and authorized to act to accept the Israeli invitation. It is estimated that no less than 1,000 delegates, members, and others associated with the order will attend from the United States alone.
