Paul-Emile Cardinal Leger of this city was the first recipient of the newly-created Family of Man Award of the Canadian Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, in a ceremony here at the Expo Theater. Henry Blatt, national chairman of B’nai B’rith in Canada, made the presentation before an audience of invited guests from all sectors of the religious, secular and governmental life of Quebec Province. Justice Harry Batshaw and Samuel Bronfman, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Jewish Congress, were also present.
Mr. Blatt described the Cardinal as a “foremost spokesman” on the local, national and international scene — and the “catalyst for greater understanding between peoples of the world.”
The Family of Man Award will be given every year to a Canadian who has made a “significant contribution to the development of understanding and mutual respect among his fellow men,” a spokesman for B’nai B’rith said.
