The alleged plot by four reputed members of the Jewish Defense League to bomb the Long Island residence of the Soviet Union’s UN Mission was condemned today as a “shocking development” by B’nai B’rith president David M. Blumberg. Addressing the annual convention of B’nai B’rith’s Caribbean District, Blumberg said that the plot, “if true, exposes the deplorable, self-defeating tactics of those who advocate this kind of senseless violence.”
“The outrage,” he told 300 delegates, “Is compounded by the fact that President Nixon is in Moscow at this very moment seeking to establish a basis for peaceful coexistence and to safeguard the human rights of Jews in the Soviet Union, as the administration has assured us he will do.” Four persons were arrested Tuesday night in the Lido Beach, L.I. Jewish Center where authorities said the suspects were assembling two fragmentation bombs. All were charged with possession of explosives and conspiracy to bomb the Soviet residence. A JDL spokesman denied that the suspects, three students and one unemployed, were members of his group.
