B’nai B’rith said today it had voiced its “serious concern” over the anti-Semitic outbreaks in Argentina and Uruguay to their embassy heads in this country, and had been advised that the governments of both nations would act against anti-Jewish extremist groups.
Label A. Katz, president of B’nai B’rith, in a report to the organization’s Board of Governors, disclosed that he and other B’nai B’rith representatives had met with Ambassador Roberto T. Alemann of Argentina on July 18. At that time, B’nai B’rith protested the failure of Argentine police to make a single arrest in the more than 100 incidents of violence of the past 18 months.
The B’nai B’rith group also met that day with State Department officials, Ambassador Delesseps Morrison, U.S. representative to the Organization of American States, and Argentina’s representatives.
Mr. Katz also reported that on July 25 a B’nai B’rith group discussed the recent rash of anti-Jewish assaults in Montevideo with Bautista Ochoteco, Uruguay’s charge d’affaires. Mr. Ochoteco, it was reported, said that the incidents were gravely disturbing to his government and that he was certain it would take positive countermeasures.
