Senator Alfred M. Cohen, president of the B’nai Brith, today characterized the Robinson senatorial address on conditions in Germany as “the voice of the American people”.
He declared that Senator Robinson’s denunciation of Nazi persecutions would reach the attention of responsible authorities in Germany, “whose program would reduce to utter helplessness more than a half million people who for generations and centuries have regarded Germany as their fatherland”.
“The characteristically American address of Senator Joseph T. Robinson in the United States Senate last Saturday, in which he excoriated the Hitler administration, is all the more significant because it immediately followed the appointment of William E. Dodd as Ambassador to Germany”, said Senator Cohen.
“Senator Robinson, Democratic floor leader of the Senate and close officially and personally to the President of the United States, spoke with well-nigh the highest official sanction of the American people on our attitude toward Nazi persecution of Jews.
“His prediction that Germany will receive only a setback from her action should cause that government to shrink before the charges which have been made against her.
“Such expressions from the ranking member of the highest legislative body by whom the nomination of the German Ambassador must be confirmed are as near as may be the voice of the American people.”
