B’nai B’rith Wider Scope Committee Starts Campaign for $25,000 in Georgia

The Jewish communities in the South will be asked to contribute the amount of $25,000 as their share toward the $2,000,000 fund now being completed by the Wider Scope Committee of the Independent Order B’nai B’rith, the largest Jewish fraternal organization in the United States for extending the scope of its cultural and fraternal activities.

The campaign for this amount will be started on January 20, with the cooperation of all members of the Order and others who are in sympathy with the I. O. B. B.’s aims and work. Rabbi David Marx of Hebrew Benevolent Congregation, Atlanta, has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the campaign in Georgia. Joseph N. Reisman is state chairman and Frank E. Lowenstein is chairman for Atlanta. J. H. Wilensky is treasurer, M. J. Greenblatt is secretary and the Executive Committee is composed of Rabbi Tobias Geffen, Rabbi Abraham P. Hirmes and Rabbi Marx. Oscar Leonard of St. Louis has been delegated by the National Wider Scope Committee to direct the campaign.

An event of great interest to the B’nai B’rith membership will take place on January 27, when the convention of District Grand Lodge No 5 will be opened in Atlanta. The proceedings will last until the 29th and will be attended by delegates from the entire district comprising the states of Georgia, Florida, South Carolina. Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Prominent speakers are expected to address the convention and there will be a dinner in honor of the delegates.

A preliminary survey is now being made under the direction of Henry Alexander, member of the national Executive Committee of the B’nai B’rith as to whether a Hillel Foundation is to be established at the University of Georgia.
