Expansion of its nationwide cultural and educational program, including the promotion of the Hebrew language and literature, increasing the number of gold and silver medals to college students for proficiency in Hebrew and financial support to Hebrew Day Schools was approved by delegates to the 58th annual convention of the Bnai Zion.
The American fraternal Zionist organization announced that it had given Hebrew proficiency awards to students in 18 colleges and universities during the past year. Under its policy of aiding Hebrew Day Schools, the Bnai Zion Foundation will provide assistance to the B’ani Jeshurun Day School in Manhattan, the first to receive such help. Rabbi William Berkowitz, spiritual leader of the congregation, is a national vice-president of the Bnai Zion.
Purchases of more than $100,000 in Israel Bonds were announced at the convention, held in Kutcher’s Hotel here. Delegates were addressed by Avraham Avi-Hai, an official in the office of Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, who envisioned a new era of hopeful cooperation in the Middle East following Israel’s achievement in repelling Arab aggression.
