Following a debate lasting three hours, the Board of Deputies by a vote of 36 to 32 yesterday rejected a motion to participate in the world Jewish conference scheduled for August 14th in Geneva.
Leading in opposition to participation in the world Jewish conference were the members of the Joint Foreign Committee.
When the Board expressed a wish to be acquainted with the undisclosed reasons which have prompted the Joint Foreign Committee to oppose the conference, press and audience alike were requested to leave and the session was continued in camera. It was during the closed session that the opposition obtained a majority.
The principal point of disagreement, it is learned was on the question of whether or not the conference could aid German Jewry.
Leonard G. Montefiore, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association, which like the Board of Deputies is affiliated with the Joint Foreign Committee, maintained that intervention on the part of Jewish leaders from abroad is contrary to the interests of German Jewry.
Rabbi Samuel Daiches lead the opposition.
