Five people were injured yesterday when a bomb exploded in Canada Park near the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway. Ronen Hadad, 11, of Bat Yam, today remained on the critical list with head, chest and leg injuries. The Palestine Liberation Organization claimed responsibility for the bomb blast which occurred shortly before noon when the park was crowded with thousands of people.
The bomb was planted in a bag inside a tree trunk. Police bomb experts said the explosive was of the kind used by terrorist organizations. Dozens of Arabs who were in the park at the time of the explosion were detained for questioning, but were released shortly afterwards.
The park, one of the most popular resorts in the area, attracts visitors from the entire central region each weekend. It is located near the Latrun monastery at the intersection of the roads leading to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Ramallah.
