A West German Government request to the Government of Paraguays demanding the extradition of Dr. Josef Mengele, long sought for trial in this country as the Nazi “selection” doctor at Auschwitz who determined which Jews were to be sent to the gas chambers, was rejected in a communication to West Germany this week end from Paraguay on the grounds that Mengele is not in that country.
A government spokesman said, however, it has been established definitely that a man calling himself Jose Mengele acquired Paraguayan citizenship on Nov. 28, 1959. If Jose and Josef Mengele are the same person at was stated, extradition would be out of the question, since the Paraguay law forbids the extradition of that country citizens.
