Extension of the statute of limitations covering major crimes committed during the Nazi regime was advocated here today by the Social Democrat Information Bulletin, official organ of the leading opposition party.
(At Tel Aviv, today, a meeting of representatives of immigrants from areas formerly occupied by the Nazis petitioned the West German Government to extend the statute of limitations, so that ex-Nazis who committed “High crimes may not escape justice and punishment.”)
Under the present law, homicidal crimes committed during the Nazi regime will not be subject to prosecution after next May 8. The Social Democratic Party, in proposing that the limitation be extended for another five-year period, to 1965, holds that such an extension would not amount to a “second denazification” move, but would make it possible to try those ex-Nazis whose crimes have been uncovered more recently. On the other hand, the Social Democrats say, the extension would also, help the acquittal of persons falsely accused of committing high crimes during the Nazi regime.
