State Secretary Gunter von Hase, head of the Government Information Office, said here today that the Arabs “should always have a special understanding of our relations toward Israel.” On the other hand, “he added, “Israel understands our relations with Israel.”
Mr. von Hase made that statement after disclosing that Chancellor Erhard has ordered Bonn’s envoy to Cairo, Dr. Georg Federer, to remain here to advise the Government on what actions to take in case Walter Ulbricht, chief of state of Communist East Germany, carries out the plan to pay a state visit to Cairo. Dr. Federer was recalled from Cairo to report on conversations he had held on that subject with Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Chancellor discussed the issue with the Cabinet at a meeting today that lasted three hours.
Mr. von Hase said that German public opinion has shown clearly that it takes the projected Ulbricht visit to Cairo seriously. If Ulbricht does go to Cairo, Mr. von Hase said, “it should be clear that the Government will draw–at the right time–such economic and political consequences as are in the interests of the Government.”
