A frank admission that the minister of education in the former Maniu cabinet, Dr. Alexander Vayda Voevod “warmly” supported him in his campaign of propaganda, or as he called it, education, among the Christian population of Borscha, Marmaresch and Szighet was made today by Constantin Danila, anti-Semitic leader, and one of the 83 defendants being tried for participation in the anti-Semitic outbreaks in Borscha last July.

The fifth day of the trial at Satu-Mare was featured by the testimony of two aged Jews who told of being thrown out of their homes and then dumped into the river by Danila and another defendant, Timis. The two Jews, Jehu-

dah Stein, 60, and Solomon Stein 62, brought tears to the eyes of members of the court as they told of Danila’s breaking into their house and beating them up despite their pleas for mercy.

Both Jews were confronted in the court room by Timis who denied everything. The president of the court, however, reminded him that during the preliminary investigation he had admitted having a share in the attack on the Steins. Timis then claimed that his earlier confession had been made under duress.

Another important witness today was a Borscha physician who issued certificates to a number of the Jews injured in the riots attesting to the fact that their wounds were not curable in less than a fortnight.
