Jack Ryder, coach of the Boston College track teams for more than 30 years and coach of the Boston Athletic Association for almost 30 years today reiterated a previously made statement that he favors withdrawal of the American team from the Berlin Olympic games.
“Of course, I cannot speak for Boston College,” he stated, after William J. Bingham, Harvard athletics director, had announced opposition to the Olympics. “But I have already gone on record favoring withdrawal of the U.S. team because of Germany’s racial and religious persecutions.
“It is hard to believe that a Jewish or Catholic athlete would receive fair decisions from officials saturated with the doctrine now prevalent in Germany,” he added.
Commenting on his own statement, Mr. Bingham, who was to manage the American track and field team in the Olympics, pointed out that he spoke more as a member of the American Olympic Committee than as the Harvard athletics head.
The outstanding Jewish athlete at Harvard at present is Milton Green, star hurdler and broad-jumper, who is a definite Olympic prospect.
