Both Orthodox and non-Orthodox groups are disappointed by an Israeli government decision to establish a pluralistic conversion training institute. Orthodox leaders have stated that it is forbidden under Jewish law to have the more liberal streams involved in the conversion process. Non-Orthodox leaders said the institute cannot succeed without Orthodox participation. The Ne’eman Committee, which was seeking to resolve the conversion crisis in Israel, recently recommended that the institute be created to educate potential converts, but that the actual conversion be performed by Orthodox rabbis.
