Brandeis University announced today the creation of the Philip W. Lown School of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. The new school, made possible by an undisclosed major gift from nationally-known industrialist-philanthropist Philip W. Lown of West Newton, Mass., will enable Brandeis to incorporate several separate existing departments, institutes and programs in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies into one school and will also permit the University to expand greatly its study and research programs in these areas.
A Philip W. Lown Professorship in Jewish education has been established at Hebrew Teachers College in the Boston suburb of Brookline in honor of Mr. Lown, who is president of the college. The professorship was established in honor of Mr. Lown’s 75th birthday.
