Prof. M. Pinkuss, rabbi of the Sao Paulo congregation, today announced his opposition to the imposition of communal sanctions against members of the various Jewish communities in Latin America who do not contribute to current pro-Israel fund-raising campaigns.
Rabbi Pinkuss’ stand, published in the current issue of the Cronica Israelite, opposes the establishment of laymen’s tribunals to threaten or actually impose sanctions of a religious, social or economic nature on persons who do not submit to their taxation or other orders. Pinkuss published his protest following an unsuccessful attempt to obtain repudiation of the sanctions idea from the Central Jewish Committee of Brazil or Gedalje Zuchowitski, representative of the Jewish Agency.
