A huge protest meeting against the persecution of the Jews in Germany was held at Porto Allegro under the sponsorship of the well-known Brazilian jurist, Dr. Alberto Gigante, and other Brazilian intellecturals.
The meeting created a deep impression all over the country and was widely featured in the press.
Following the lead of German representatives elsewhere, the German Minister declared that all reports of persecutions were inventions by enemies of Germany. This statement is made in reply to a telegraphic protest sent him by the Jewish community of Natal.
A committee to make contact with all Jewish communities in Brazil has been created through the initiative of Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaiah Rafalovitch with the purpose of preparing for a relief fund drive for German Jews.
The appeal, which the Committee is preparing, will be signed by prominent local German, French, and English Jews who are influential in commerce and industry.
Addresses dealing with the Jewish contributions to the development of Brazil were delivered May 28, which was the day set apart for the Jewish colony at the International Exhibition in Brazil, arranged by the Chamber of Commerce and Imports of Sao Paolo.
