A Brazilian Justice Ministry spokesman was reported here having stated last week that Franz Stangl, the former Nazi commandant of the murder camps of Treblinka and Sobibor, may be released from jail instead of being extradited because of a Brazilian statute of limitations.
Jose La Penha, Jr., said that Austria, which has requested Stangl’s extradition on war crimes charges, would have to prove that he committed a crime within the past 20 years. “It has been more than 20 years since the war ended,” La Penha declared, adding that “Austria would have to show good cause why the statute of limitations should be suspended.”
