The gates of Brazil will be open to refugees and persecuted people of all races, religions and nationalities, President Juscelino Kubitschek declared here today at a reception in his honor, tendered by the major immigration societies of the country including the United Hias Service.
The President, son of immigrants to Brazil, noted that immigrants had played an important part in the building of the country and that, in return, Brazil had opened its highest posts to immigrants and their descendants.
Snhr. Kubitschek, taking note of the prominent role of United Hias in the function, expressed gratitude for its having given him an award last February.
Carlos Israels of New York, president of United Hias, who addressed the reception, said he was honored to be present at the event in his official capacity. He underlined the international stature which had accrued to Brazil as a result of its liberal immigration policy.
