Isaac Daitch, well-known Jewish actor and founder of the Yiddish theatre in Brazil, died here Friday. He was 50 years old.
He was born in Tolchin, the Ukraine, December 18, 1884. His father was a Hebrew teacher and the boy was educated in his school.
Trained for a locksmith, Daitch left home while still a youth and worked at various occupations. Later he became a choir singer and, becoming deeply interested in the theatre, played minor roles in Czernowitz, Rumania, and other Jewish centers. Not until he came to Vienna and had achieved considerable success in the general theatre did he become interested in the Yiddish stage. In 1920 he organized a Yiddish troupe in Vienna, which achieved great success.
After a successful tour through Rumania, Daitch went to Paris and later toured Argentina and Brazil with his troupe. Since 1930 he made his home in Rio de Janeiro.
Originally he was named Solomeinok, but owing to his father’s reputation for scholarship, the family was called Daitch.
