President Emilio Garrastazu Medici affirmed Brazil’s policy of neutrality in the Israel-Arab conflict, pledged to “maintain itself equidistantly” from the discussions and differences between Israel and the Arab states, and affirmed Brazil’s adherence to “the principles of peaceful solution of international controversies.” According to observers, Medici, who made these remarks in his foreign policy message, was reaffirming policies of previous Brazilian administrations but went a step further in minimizing Brazil’s official government view that Jerusalem should be internationalized.
