Bridget Loves Bernie, a weekly television program about an intermarried Jewish man and a Catholic woman which has been under intensive Jewish criticism since it was first telecast, is one of several programs which have been dropped from the Columbia, Broadcasting System’s schedule for next fall.
Robert D. Wood, president of the CBS-TV network, said the decision to cancel the program was “absolutely removed, independent and dissociated from criticism of the show from Jewish groups.” He said the protests “had been limited to a very small, though articulate group.” He said the network had received fewer than 200 letters of complaint, which he compared with 6000 letters from viewers who protested abortion episodes on another CBS-TV program.
John H. Mitchell, president of Screen Gems, which produced Bridget Loves Bernie, said “we are doing everything to make it happen” to have the program picked up by one of the other TV networks.
