The British War Office announced today that former Field Marshal Fritz Erich von Manstein, German commander in the Russian campaign, will stand trial shortly in Hamburg on 17 charges of genocide and atrocities against civilians, including the charge that be participated in the program of mass extermination of Jews in Russia.
Von Manatein was found by medical examiners to be fit for trial. The War Office announcement said that the Nazi field marshal’s program of extermination of Jews and Gypsies in Russia was carried out by means of “shooting, gassing and drowning” and was in line with the “Hitler Government’s planned “biological extermination of the Jewish race.”
