The sharp criticism evoked by Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden’s proposal advocating modification of Israel’s borders and expressing his readiness to act as mediator between the Arabs and Israel on that basis, brought an indication today from official circles here that the proposal “was misunderstood.”
It was explained that the Prime Minister was only proposing a compromise between the borders set by the United Nations resolutions of 1947 and those established under the 1949 armistice pacts and that the proposal envisaged “concessions on both sides.” At the same time, it was emphasized that “there would be no question of large transfers of territory such as would be necessary if the 1947 resolutions were enforced, though more would be involved than ‘minor mutual adjustments’ which Foreign Minister Sharett implied in New York were all the Israel Government could contemplate.”
