The British Government has decided to admit 1,500 Jews to Palestine, monthly, for the fourth-month period–beginning on Jan. 1–during which the Anglo-American inquiry committee will be conducting its investigations, High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham announced tonight.
Sir Alan told hurriedly summoned delegations of Jewish and Arab leaders–with whom he met separately–of the Government’s decision. The Jewish leaders who met with the High commissioner included Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, and Moshe Shertok, political chief of the Jewish Agency.
In a statement issued tonight, the Agency declared that while “every Jew brought into Palestine is a Jew saved, nevertheless the decision to admit, for the time being, 1,500 a month, taken nine months after victory and almost eight months after the Agency’s application for 100,000 certificates, must cause deep disappointment. It is an outrage to the feelings of the martyred Jews,” the statement continued, “and a cruel prolongation of the Jewish survivors’ agony.”
