The British Government is investigating reports about expropriation of Jewish textile factories and breweries by the Latvian Government, Viscount Cranborne, Foreign Undersecretary, has stated.
Viscount Cranborne replied in writing to Col. Josiah Wedgwood, Labor Member of Parliament, who asked about the reported expropriations, whether compensation was given and whether the action was compatible with the rights of the Jewish minority in Latvia.
The British Charge d’Affaires at Riga has reported, the Undersecretary said, that the Latvian Government recently assumed powers to liquidate industrial and commercial undertakings, and applied them in certain cases. “I am not aware that these powers have been exercised against Jewish interests and will call for a report on this subject,” he declared.
