The British Government is not “intervening” in the current dispute between Israel and the United Arab Republic about the latter’s action in halting ships carrying Israel cargoes through the Suez Canal.
That was announced in the House of Commons by John Profumo, Minister of State. The Government was asked by Aneurin Bevan, the Labor Party’s “shadow Foreign Minister,” what further action has been taken, or is contemplated, to ensure freedom of shipping to and from Israel through the Suez Canal.
Mr. Profumo replied that her Majesty’s Government position on passage of ships through the Canal was stated recently, and he continued: “But I understand that the matter is being discussed through United Nations channels, and I do not think it would be helpful to intervene.”
(In Washington, Israel Charge d’Affaires Y. Herzog met today with under-secretary of state Robert D. Murphy for a talk presumably including the issue involving the Danish ship “Inge Toft” which is being detained by Egypt at the entrance to the Suez Canal.)
