The Foreign Office today announced that the British Government has ordered an investigation of the transfer of military equipment to Egypt from British stores at Rafa, on the Egyptian-Palestine border. The transfer was termed a British breach of the Palestine truce in a complaint sent last week by the Israeli Government to the United Nations.
Admitting that a “commercial transaction” involving British army stores did take place, a Foreign Office spokesman said that as far as he knew the equipment was non-military. He added that details on the nature of the equipment sold to Egypt are now awaited by the government.
