Ten 60-foot trawlers, which were originally ordered by the British Admiralty toward the end of World War II, will be turned over to Israel authorities within the next six months, it was made known here today. The vessels are now being reconverted to Israel use. Each trawler will carry a crew of eight and will be able to remain at sea for ten days at a time.
Moshe Bar-Shimon, technical advisor to the Israel Department of Fisheries, said that the trawlers will be an important addition to the new state’s fishing fleet and will increase production by some 1,000 tons of fish annually. He said the vessels will be based at Haifa and at Caesarea, where a new fishing port is being established.
A giant earth excavator complete with all auxiliary equipment has been shipped to Israel where it will be used in the building program at Kibbutz Yavneh, near Gedera, it was announced here today by the Strauss Metallurgical Company, manufacturers of the machine. The disassembled excavator was packed in crates and shipped in two freighters which are expected in Haifa shortly.
The British Colonial Office last night announced that it would redeem Palestine Bearer Bonds of the former Palestine Mandate Government at par value between August 1 and 31, 1952. The bonds carry a face value of 10 pounds, and all valid interest coupons dated up to July 31, 1952, will also be paid. The announcement added that no guarantees can be given that bonds presented after August 31 will be redeemed.
