Senator William E. Borah has declined an invitation to address a mass meeting in New York on Nov. 2, called to protest a. feared reversal in British policy on Palestine, it was disclosed here today. In a message to Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, Mr. Borah expressed the belief that Great Britain would fulfill her mandatory obligations faithfully and added.
“but I think strongly that great Britain is now placed in a very delicate and dangerous situation and that we may not be helping the cause in which you are interested by holding a mass meeting which would have no justification except on the theory that she is proposing to do a reprehensible thing.”
Mr. Borah also warned that the United States could’ not retain Europe’s respect “by directing nations how? They shall carry out their treaties” without at the same time being prepared to assume mandatory obligations herself.
