The abstention of Britain on the Security Council vote recommending the admission of Israel into the United Nations was criticized here this week-end at a national conference of the Poale Zion of Britain by four Jewish Members of Parliament who addressed the conference. The M.P.’s, all of whom touched on one aspect or another of the relations between Britain and Israel, were Sidney Silverman, Ian Mikardo, Barnett Janner and S. Segal.
The conference sent greetings to President Weizmann, Premier-designate David Ben Gurion and the Knesseth (Constituent Assembly) of Israel. A number of speakers expressed themselves in favor of a merger of the Mapai and Mapam parties in Israel, provided their was no compromise of principle as a result of such a consolidation. It was announced that Morgan Phillips, chairman of the British Labor Party, sent congratulations to the Mapai on its victory in the recent elections.
The allocation of 1,000 Israeli visas to be used for Jewish emigration from Britain in the next few months was announced today by Itzhak Werfel, head of the Jewish Agency immigration department, in an address before a meeting of the Palestine Committee, which is composed of representatives of all Zionist groups. Werfel stressed the importance of training youths for pioneer work in Israel.
