Britain’s Jewish umbrella group is dispatching a project manager to work in Manchester, the site of growing anti-Semitic attacks.
The decision by the Board of Deputies of British Jews to hire Jonny Wineberg to be project consultant for the board’s regional development project in Manchester marks the first time in 250 years that the board has hired someone to work outside its London headquarters. The Manchester post is one of the first steps taken by the board to implement its plan to set up regional councils throughout the country to ensure that Jewish concerns are addressed in parliamentary processes.
Manchester, which has one of Britain’s largest Jewish communities, has been the site of a rash of anti-Semitic incidents over the past two years, including attacks that prompted the police to provide escorts to Jews walking to and from synagogue.
