Britain’s new envoy to Israel presented his letters of credence today to President Izhak Ben-Zvi in a brief ceremony in which he voiced confidence that Britain could rely on Israel’s cooperation in the common interest of establishing peace in the Middle East.
Patrick Francis Hancock, the new British Ambassador, told President Ben-Zvi that the British people were impressed by Israel’s achievements and admired the qualities which made them possible. He noted the coincidence of the ceremony and the anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration on this day 42 years ago. He also paid tribute to the late Dr. Chaim Weizmann, first president of Israel.
In his reply, President Ben-Zvi stressed the historic ties that linked Israel to Britain and told the ambassador that the name of Lord Balfour was held in reverence and great gratitude in Israel.
