The fiftieth anniversary convention of the Independent Order Brith Abraham closed today at Mecca Temple with election of officers and a banquet tonight at the Hotel Commodore. Officers elected include Samuel Goldstein, a Brooklyn assistant district attorney, Grand Master; Max L. Hollander, Grand Secretary, and Max F. Welff, first Deputy Grand Master.
The 1,500 delegates yesterday witnessed the presentation to Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the Jewish National Fund, of a $5,000 check representing the first payment on a promised contribution of $25,000 for establishing a colony in Palestine.
Resolutions were adopted to increase the scholarships maintained at Yeshiva College from three to five, and to present illuminated resolutions of praise to President Roosevelt and Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
Mayor LaGuardia, in an address, recalled that he had found many principles of American government in the Bible and Taimud. As to tolerance, he said, “I, for one, cannot get excited about a reputation for tolerance. Any intelligent American is naturally tolerant. It is part of the American creed.”
