British Ambassador Sir Oliver Franks, in his first public speech in Washington, today expressed the hope that the United States and Britain will find a “Just solution of the Palestine problem” by working with the United Nations, and that they would to able to do it “in a different atmosphere than in the last few weeks.”
Speaking before the National Press Club, the British diplomat said that there is “doubt and uncertainty” in British minds over the American approach to the Palestine problem. America and Britain, he declared, have “common aspirations” in Palestine. Both desire a cessation of warfare, both desire to promote peace and stability in the Middle East area, he asserted. “If there is no peace, order and stability, there will be a vacuum and that vacuum must be avoided,” he concluded.
