Jewish groups lodged a protest today with the British military authorities against the Fourth Medium Battery, Royal Artillery, because of the Nazi swastikas painted on the front of tanks belonging to this military unit.
The London press explained today that these symbols of Hitlerism represent the battery insignias and are also very unpopular among the soldiers.
A representative of the Evening News interviewed several of the tank drivers about the reaction of the soldiers toward the matter. The reply was that the insignia is “pretty embarrassing for new soldiers but after a time we get used to people raising their hands in mock Nazi salute whenever the battery travels through towns or villages.”
The battery which bears the Nazi symbol on its tanks is stationed in the vicinity of Longmoor and Borden.
It was pointed out here today that last year a British artillery unit appeared in Palestine at the Levant Fair with Nazi swastikas also painted on its tanks. Great protest was provoked by this symbolism in Palestine and brought severe criticism in the Palestine press.
