The Civil Service Clerical Association, a union of civil servants in Britain, has cancelled all bookings with the Stanmore Hotel of the seaside resort of Margate and has instituted a boycott against the hotel because it discriminates against Jews, it became known here today.
The union, which had booked rooms for some of its members and was scheduled to hold a section of its annual convention in the hotel, also wrote to secretaries of local branches suggesting that members of the union who might have arranged for rooms in the Stanmore should cancel the accommodations because discrimination was against the union’s policy.
So effective has the action been, that another hotel in Margate which once discriminated against the “Jewish fraternity,” has written the union to state that although there is a close working relationship between it and the Stanmore its policy is not discriminatory. The Stanmore, whose notepaper carries the printed slogan that “the management reserves the right to refuse admission to members of the Hebrew persuasion,” has written the union to state that this policy would not hold for the union’s convention–it is only applied to the normal holiday trade.
