Appreciation of the cooperation of the Jewish community in the steps taken by the British to bring about normal conditions in Shanghai was expressed by General Duncan, Commander of the British defense in China.

In a letter addressed to “Israel’s Messenger”, the Anglo-Jewish weekly in Shanghai, General Duncan expresses his “appreciation for the generous way in which the Jewish community as sisted the Shanghai defense forces.”

The commander mentions particularly Sir Elly Kadoorie, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hayim, S. A. Hardoon and Maurice Benjamin who, at great personal sacrifice, placed their properties at the Commander’s disposal for the accommodation of troops. Many others have helped in various ways, he says.

“The way in which the Jewish community has come forward to help is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten,” General Duncan declares.
