Reports that baggage belonging to displaced Jews which was seized at Bremen August 6 on the Israel-bound vessel Drommit had been confiscated by the British authorities and handed over to the Germans for sale were denied here today. The cargo of the Drommit was seized by U.S. officials in the enclave in the British zone because some boxes labelled “household goods” were found to contain machinery being shipped without export licenses.
The denial of the charges that 90 percent of the baggage had been sold came in a letter to the World Jewish Congress from Joseph Rosensaft, chairman of the Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the British zone of Germany. He disclosed that no disposition has been made of any baggage, that the British authorities are now investigating the question and that a decision will be reached in a few days.
