A British court martial today confirmed the sentences imposed upon Major Ralph Herbert and Thomas Newman who were charged with being involved in illegal sale of arms to Jews in Palestine prior to the establishment of the Jewish State. Each had been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

The British Government was asked today in the House of Lords whether it intends to re-admit Israel to the sterling bloc, and whether the Egyptian restrictions at the Suez Canal on the passage of oil tankers bound for the Haifa refineries are still in force.

The two questions were presented in writing by Lord Strabolgi, in order to give the government time to prepare an answer. Lord Strabolgi also wanted the Government to explain the circumstances under which Israel had left the sterling bloc.
